At least it's not golf

I love fall. It is far and away my favorite season. I love the smells, the colors, the mountains, the cool weather, the sweaters, the crunch of leaves under your feet.... I could go on forever.
There is just one problem with fall:

BYU football.

Yep, it's that time of year again. The time of year for entire Saturdays taken away by thinking about football, listening to talk radio about football, discussing football strategies around the dinner table, watching football, being in a bad mood because they lost... or even because they should have won by a bigger margin.
my husband has few obsessions: music (weezer to be specific), google earth, locking the doors, and BYU football.
The others I can deal with, but the football thing, now that can get annoying. Especially as we are entering Brian's last semester, which we have lovingly named it "The Semester From....." you fill in the blank.
He will be tackling more credit hours than I have nightmares about, on top of full time work and full time fathering.
So, in short, BYU football rains on my fall parade.
And I don't like it.

move over clouds...

She has always been a mommas girl. She has always been shy, but secretly loving any attention. She looks to me whenever someone asks her a question. She hides behind me whenever someone pays her a compliment. She shys away from being the center of attention, when really, deep inside it is what she craves. She has been caged by her own inhibitions and insecurities. It's hard to see your daughter have insecurities at such a young age. It is hard to see the sunshine hidden by the clouds of inhibitions. I have wanted desperately to move those clouds and let the world bask in her glow. But I just haven't been able to find a way.

But today my daughter found her rainbow.

Today was her very first dance class.
She was shy, she was unsure. she moved slowly. she kept looking back at me. She was rigid. Uncomfortable. But after a bit, she loosened. She moved. She stretched. She leaped. She smiled.

She became a dancer.

why having me as a mom is so beneficial

The last thing he said to me today, before stepping out of the comfort of the mini van and into the wild, unkown territory of third grade was:
"I just really hope I don't look like a dork."
To which I replied,
"Jonas, I made you. Me. The coolest person on the planet. Just look at me. You are incapable of looking like a dork."
To which he replied, his eyes rolling upward,
"Mom, you have a stain on your shirt."
I hope my kid, the most undorkiest of them all, has a good day. I am sure he will. I am also confident he will make a million friends, be head of the class, be teacher's pet, and rule the school the school by lunch. He is after all my spawn.

New Beginnings

I've come to the conclusion that the word Summer must mean play time in some other language. That is what summer was to us this year. No big trips, no fancy guests, no real big outings either. But it was play time none the less. It was full of sun, exploring, laughter, creativity and childhood. It was a good summer. But as fun as it was, we all know it has to end. If it didn't I think one of my adorable children would likely strangle another adorable sibling... and drive me crazy in the process. We decided to end summer nie style, with a private dinner party. A fancy party. Well as fancy as this house will ever get, at least. We pulled out the nice dishes for this party. We lit candles. We drank fancy soda. We put our pinkies in the air.

We laughed. We laughed a lot. My children are rarely serious. I am not quite sure where they got that from.
We laughed at Caleb's innovative ways of using the fancy table settings.

We ate and we talked. Talked about the summer; what they loved, what they didn't. We talked about the new school year. All the excitement and all the nerves. We gave them a chance to voice their concerns. It was cool to see these kids as little people trying to figure out their place in this big world.

We talked about our family goal:

We named things we want to work harder at this school year. Even those of us who are not heading off to school... like Caleb. He vowed to work harder to challenge our patience in order to make us better parents. He's sweet like that.
As we talked, I looked around the table at each one of the four people sitting there and saw my universe. I couldn't help but think that these are the coolest, smartest, bravest, strongest people in the world to me. They make me proud every single day. I Love them more than my intellect can comprehend. I promised to myself that, this school year, I will work harder to be the mom/wife they deserve.

What are you going to work on this school year?

Today's Random Wants:

(note: items are subject to change without notice. )

A camera. A real live one. I watched "The Secret". And I have waited and envisioned it and everything, but for some reason it doesn't magically appear like its supposed to...

A home. A real one. Not a borrowed one. One in which I can do what I please when I please.

A maid service. I mean just for the day. And especially for my bathrooms, because they are rather disgusting...

A quick and easy way to make money at home. No, not Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, jewelry by design, words on walls, diet drinks or data entry. Like, something I could do that would require no effort, but just pay me a lot of money. Having a hard time finding something along those lines.

A smaller butt. Because today I went to a scrapbook sale and I noticed that my butt was in a lot of people's way. It's even in MY way. And that's definitely not not a good thing.

And finally, world peace. Because I am selfless like that.

weekend by numbers

8.... days until school starts. Which meant that this weekend, it was time for our annual date with accompanied school shopping. This is where Hailey dies and goes to clothing heaven, where everything is pink and sparkles and the angelic choir sings High School Musical songs. This is where Jonas dies and goes to spirit prison where we drag him around torturing him with the idea of shirts with collars. And we say the word UNDERWEAR out loud. In regards to him. Then he doesn't talk to us for an hour. And he doesn't perk up until he hears the word lunch.... actually the word soda.
7 .... hundred number of times Hailey gasped with delight and twirled and raised her voice to a higher pitch than I had ever known existed, exclaiming that THIS WAS THE CUTEST THING EVVVVEERRRRRR!
6..... pairs of jeans purchased in boot cut, carpenter, straight leg, slim fit, classic fit, and sickeningly sparkly. All with adjustable waist pulled to the max because apparently my kids have the waists of starving children.
5...... rather large and loud tantrums thrown by Caleb. Despite my being prepared with suckers and chocolate milk and his blankey and his mute button (pacifier), and a buzz lightyear. Lovingly, he gave us at least one tantrum in every store just to provide us with a reminder that 2 year olds can just make life a lot more interesting. And loud. It can also provide you with the opportunity to receive ugly stares from people whose children obviously NEVER behave that way.
4...... stores visited. Each one was spent reminding Hailey she didn't need everything in the store and that there are more colors than pink and brown. and that glitter and jewels can in fact be used in excess. On the other hand we spent the time in each store, begging and pleading Jonas to choose something to wear. Anything. Anything other than boxers and a old t-shirt... please. I would have even let him buy a Spongebob shirt. I was desperate.
3...... hundred dollars we started the day with. we ended with a LOT less.
2...... number of parents who felt that they had been beaten with a blunt object due to the cost, the stress, and the noise level of the entire day.
1..... backpack purchased. This is the first year we have no character back packs! It was a very close call with a Camp Rock back pack but thankfully, the pink camouflage won Hailey over in the end.

And the day ended with a rather impressive fashion show, which was interrupted briefly by a naked 2 year old streaker. I think it was politically motivated.

I'm baaaaack

I am back. with loads of laundry.
I am not well rested.
I managed to avoid all the blood sucking mosquitos.
I have an increased knowledge of the Jonas Brothers, and of just who is playing who in the Twilight movie.
I am also pranked out.
I have also come to the conclusion that girls today were never given proper s'mores making instructions and that is a tragedy.
I made lots of new inside jokes that will last the whole year... I wasn't asked once to do my cheerleader impression from last year, which I was happy to retire.
I am convinced, after what the girls said about me during testimony meeting, that the bishop thinks I am the biggest goof off ever and am awaiting my release.
Our surprise special guest, Mindy Gledhill, (our girls LOVE her music) was very sweet to the girls...AND is one of the naturally prettiest people I have ever seen in person.
Standing next to her in pictures made me quickly feel a lot like this:
And when I came home, I had three over excited children to greet me. One of which had made a change to her ears while I was gone.

I am catching my breath and and diving right back into my daily life; and it feels really good.

all my bags are packed, I'm ready to go...

So I made it through the weekend! I even made it through the talk. Even though, had my generous portion of thigh fat not been in the way, my knees would have been knocking.
It's over!
The crafts are packed.
My clothes are packed.
My bug repellent with deet is packed.
My swim suit is not packed. I am not just not that into huge public displays of embarrassment.
My kids keep following me around like little baby chicks trying to hold on to every moment they have left. Seriously, you would think I was going off to war. And , I guess I am.
I am going to fight the battle of sleep when you are surrounded by 20 giggling, night owl teenagers and 6 leaders that snore.
I am going off to fight for the title of Craft queen with the girls... (they are under the mistaken impression that I am the best thing that ever happened to the crafts at girls camp, and I hate to disappoint)
I am off to fight the mosquitos for my blood. Because I would like to keep it for myself, selfish person that I am.
I am off to fight the sun, which will be trying desperately to melt me as I sit on a boat in jeans, because I do not own shorts. Because like I said, I am just not that into public displays of embarrassment.
And I am leaving my husband to fight the battle of parent vs. child. I dearly hope he survives, because he has grown on me over the years.
And I am, leaving you, my friends to fight your loneliness as you try and survive four days without me and my blogged words.
May the force be with you.

Just say No!

Yesterday started off very well for me. Despite the fact I had been up quite a bit in the night with Caleb and his growing pains in his leg. I still felt rested. I showered and checked my email only to find out that I had won a HUGE box of goodies from this fabulous scrapper. I was so excited about this. Jonas wanted to get everyone breakfast himself, which was really sweet. I was able to work on girl's camp stuff for an hour before everything went down hill.
It wasn't long before the kids started fighting with each other and it never stopped. Bad, but it happens sometimes.
But then, after some phone calls, my to do list for Girls camp started growing. I got a hint of stress at this point, wondering whether I could get it all done by Sunday.
Then my mother in law, suddenly needing to go out of town, asked if I could cover the ward party this Friday for her, being that she is the only member of our activities committee. I started to feel real stress at this point.
Then some college student from Europe with such a thick accent I could BARELY understand her, knocked on the door and said she was an exchange student studying education here and the bishop sent her here to ask me a few questions about my elementary age kids. I was all, umm ok. So I invited her in only to find out she was SELLING something. And she went on and on and on. For and hour. And I wanted her to leave so I bought a children's dictionary that I don't need for 25$, that I shouldn't have spent. At that point I was stressed and annoyed at myself for not being able to say NO.
Then, the phone rang. It was a member of the bishopric. Asking me to speak in church this Sunday. I laughed. and laughed. and told him yes. Because that is something I won't say no to. But I hung up the phone and got the loveliest stress stomach ache I have had in a while.
And I woke up this morning and it's still there. Some how I know it will be there until Sunday. And I have no one to blame but myself. I really need to learn to say no.

random tidbits of information

I finished the book. (for those of you who care.)
Also, for those of you who care what I thought about it, I thought it was ok.
I love today's overcast sky.
My kids are in a constant state of fighting today. (I am not loving this.)
I wish my kids were starting school today.
I wish I had enough will power to eat a raw foods diet.

My camp crafts are coming together nicely. I am excited to see what the girls think of them.
Making stuff makes me happy.
So does Jason Mraz.
So does uploading pictures and finding some gems from Hailey like this:

I wish I had never rented Daddy Day Camp from redbox. (My kids begged me to, I swear).
I wish I knew a dentist that would work on my family for free, because I am so darned cool.
I think this is a total fun-see-in-the-theater-with-girl-friends movie:
I am exited for so you think you can dance tomorrow.
I am sad it is ending. It's been the only thing I turn the TV on for this summer.
I seriously need Mary Murphy from SoYo to take it down a notch. Lots of notches.

Come on and join in the randomness, leave me a comment with a random thought. Go on, I'm waiting....

"Breaking" updates

I wasn't able to crack open the book until Sunday afternoon but since then it has stayed in the open position.
For those of you who haven't read the books, know that I don't think these are the best books ever written by many miles. I am just this way about finishing a story. Trust me. This isn't even on my list of favorite books. I just want to know the ending before someone spoils it for me. So, what have I been doing since then?
Sunday night - Read until 2 am, (I had to get to a good stopping point)
Monday - woke up at 6am so I could read
cleaned the bathroom
did some dishes
sat down to read.
read
read
made breakfast for children while trying to read
read
cleaned up breakfast
read
one child came to tell me she threw up (it was in the toilet and due to a nagging cough and a very sensative gag reflex, lucky me.)
read while massaging afore mentioned child's back.
read
played a board game
read
made lunch
read
cleaned up lunch
put monster to bed
played battleship
read
stopped at chapter 29 (page 554) because I need a break.

The funny thing about this book and all the others in the series?
That I continue to read them, although Bella BUGS THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF ME.
No offense to anyone who feels differently.
Gotta go, I have another 200 pages until I start being a mother again.
(I SO should not be allowed to read.)

What are your progress reports?

All sorts of vampire goodness

Guess what just arrived in our mailbox?
Hailey, not quite yet old enough to read it, but old enough to hear the hype, was a tad bit excited.
I am SO in for it when she hits thirteen.
Anyway, I know what I will be doing today and tomorrow and possibly the next day.
My parents are taking Brian and I out to dinner for his birthday tonight... would it be rude to bring the book along and tell them to talk amongst themselves?
Don't answer that.
happy reading...

Another Riveting Birthday Post

I have known the birthday boy for 14 years. In 14 years I have learned a lot from him, and have laughed a lot at him. If you know him, I am sure you have done the same. What I would like to do today, on his 31st birthday, is chronicle the last 14 years with him and the things I have learned.
1995 - I learned that dying your hair all sorts of colors is really cool. I also learned that getting to know the clerk that works the graveyard shift at 7-11 (Martin), can really pay off.
1996 - I learned that if you have a major crush on someone and they seem rather uninterested, all you have to do is start a band. It really gets the chicks.
1997 - I learned that if you are on a mission and your companion is a little strange, and he offers you something to drink every night "out of the goodness of his heart", that maybe you could just turn him down.
1998 - I learned that if you are in another country and you feel writing letters to a person you are madly in love with is still making the distance grow bigger, just start emailing; it will bring the beloved person back every time.
1999 - I learned that marriage to someone really teaches you a lot about a person. Like how they have to compulsively check already locked doors, and how they have a shelf in the closet that you DO NOT DISTURB. EVER.
2000 - I learned that health insurance is a must have. Especially if you are going to get appendicitis and have your appendix removed, then a few months later pay $5000 for your wife to have a baby. Then a few months after that, get gall stones and have your gall bladder removed. Then months after that, get kidney stones.
2001 - I learned that you should always look on the bathroom door to make sure you are going in the proper gender's restroom. And that if you are a male and you walk into the bathroom and see that there are no urinals, you should then realize that maybe you are in the wrong place and quickly exit, instead of going to the bathroom anyway and scaring a young woman to death.
2002 - I learned that you can juggle a rocking band and fatherhood. If you like that sort of thing.
2003 - I learned that it is never too late to start something. Like college. Even when you have and a wife. and two kids. and a mortgage.
2004 - I learned that the human body is forgiving and resilient. It somehow will allow you to function properly when working 15 hour days while going to school, and being a good father/husband to your growing family.
2005 - I learned that even when you think there is no way to achieve your dreams, that if you approach anything with faith and a lot of prayers, doors open up and there are paths there waiting beyond them.
2006 - I learned that while it really sucks to be a full time employee and student and you have no time, that if your wife calls crying because she just had her third baby 5 days ago and she is EXTREMELY hormonal and needs help, you can still drop whatever pressing things you have, like a test, to help her.
2007 - I learned that you can officially become a golden boy to your in laws if you adapt the things that are most important to them. Such as food, BYU, and Les miserables.
2008 - I learned that if you continue to work hard, have faith and persevere, that eventually a light does show up at the end of a LONG tunnel, and that you can look back and see that the tunnel you have been making your way through, is beautiful and lined with jewels. Jewels of experience and wisdom and lessons learned. And that the journey, while long and hard, has been rewarding and worth every minute.

Happy birthday, Schwanii. I love you. Even if you are seriously old.
